I do not like where this last panel is going.

    • ∫Clémens×ds

Worried too as well. I hope the webcomic will nicely surprise us and it turns out she left a life of crime fighting because her newfound passion and talent for fishing captivates all her free time.

      • Liz

Close! Man, I’m glad that turned out alright.

  • Dean

“For one thing, the media made it REALLY difficult after I accidentally drowned those two fishermen.”

    • ∫Clémens×ds

“And then when the investigation revealed it was very much intentional? Ugh, I couldn’t hear the end of it.”

    • Ian Osmond

They were criminals. They were WAY over their catch limit, and Amanda was in the enforcement division of the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

    • Weatherheight

Glad to see I’m not the only one with a dark sense of humor. Same thought went through my head.

“I mean, it’s not like VaNessie and I we’re trying to knock over their boat, but seriously, that was the biggest lake trout I’ve ever seen. If we’d caught it,we’d have won that fishing competition for sure! And really, come on, who fishes from a boat without learning how to swim first, eh?”

(You have to say “eh” from time to time if you’re in Michigan – state law. True fact!)

  • Ben Posin

So….Amanda maybe wasn’t seeing much action then?

  • Flimflamberge

    Amanda is so cute!

  • Richard Hughes

Ooh, nice layout trick here. 😀

  • ampg

Ooh – minor character flashback, maybe?

Also, it makes a lot of sense that Amanda would be struggling with self-worth if she gave up the superhero life. I think Al can really relate to that.

    • 3-I

I reject the notion that Amanda is a minor character.

  • Anon

    Dis gun be gud.

  • Snorkels

    Cue Jaws theme.

  • ∫Clémens×ds

I wonder if that transition is a flashback to represent the introduction to her explaining the story behind giving up her superhero cowl.
(Or if it’s just Molly just showing off her mad sunset skills without a cogent narrative reason, which I’m all for.)

  • ∫Clémens×ds

After a time of reflexion, I wonder if the least believable thing the webcomic has given us, in a world where teenagers get magic superpowers, would be that someone, anyone is a fan of Alison’s superhero *tactics*. Which, by her own account, consist of punching in a straight line toward the problem until nothing punchable remains.

    • Ben Posin

Ha, that was my thought too. What tactics, she was basically a human wrecking ball!

    • Lysiuj

Actually if she also served as a human shield and as lifting/moving power it all might lend itself to quite a bit of tactical and strategic thinking.

    • Weatherheight

When you’re practically impossible to hurt, straight-line tactics work pretty well. As long as you’re okay with massive collateral damage, that is… 😀

Maybe she’s referring to Alison’s “Hey! Over Here! I’m the Distraction You Can’t Ignore!” tactic? I played that in a supers campaign and while I never solved any problems, I sure kept problems occupied really well while the rest of the team fixed their little red wagons.

    • Etveck

More than that it’s been explained that her tactics amount to getting hit until she can figure out the best place to punch. So more tactics than none at all, but not exactly useful for anyone who’s not resilient.

    • LaChatSayWha

Alison is not the least self-deprecating of young women.

    • cphoenix

Maybe it’s “fan” as in “I really admire someone who can do that and have it work!” rather than “I think that’s a good idea for me.”

  • ∫Clémens×ds

She can’t be a villain. She hasn’t monologued the pointlessness of morality for fifty pages yet, and that’s a prerequisite.

  • Bobo Chimpan

    “ya know…”
    fishing boat…

    Is Amanda a Yooper!?

  • Richard Hughes

“Oh, I’m studying marine biology at U. Mass.”

  • Hiram

I imagine super heroics might lose some of their charm after the first or second time someone has a hysterics induced heart attack while you’re trying to haul their sinking dingy out of gator lake.

  • Amulya

Hey! She WAS a superhero! PERHAPS Allison will recruit her to Valkyrie??

    • Tsapki Perez

Could be possible. If I recall Alison is Tier 1 resilient and strong, so even if going down a Tier is exponentially weaker, Amanda is probably still really tough overall and probably doesn’t need to worry about physical harm too much.

  • Ian Osmond

Hey, guys, can I just take a moment to comment how brilliant the page layout is, with the current panels floating on top of the what-we-all-expect-to-be a flashback panel?

I mean, it just gives the impression that the fishing scene exists as a background and memory to what Amanda is saying and feeling right now. It PHYSICALLY gives that impression, which is why we’re all assuming that.

That’s just really clever and effective from a storytelling point of view.

  • Weatherheight

    The Michiganders? (nah, too obvious)
Superior Squad? (Oh, the powers they got!)
The Chicago Seven Teens? (They’re were all seventeen.. until they weren’t…)
The Great Shakes? (Oh sure, you’re heroic, but you’re no Great Shakes…)
The Gals of November? (Their legend lives on…)

    What was the team name?!?

    Also, sandwiches!

    • Eric Meyer

Dr. Fitzgerald, your ship has sunk! For the Gals of November came early this year!

    • joe

the gals of november! or Edmund Fitzgerald and the Wrecking Crew

  • Weatherheight

Heh, my brain saw “headcanon” and turned it into “headcannon”. Had an image of that bony plate above Vanessa’s nose-plate lifting and firing a laser.

Then I read it again as my brain said, “Hold on a tick…?”

    • ∫Clémens×ds

  • Weatherheight

Let’s hear it for Alison for not making a bad situation worse in that group session. Way to sit on your hands, girl!

Why do I have the feeling that “You were a hero? What was your mission spec?” is the biodynamic equivalent of “Oh, wow, you go to State U, too? What’s your major?”

And this sort of confirms that Amanda isn’t too likely to take offense easily.. ya know, being Tier Two thick-skinned….

::scampers for the shadows to avoid the Pun Patrol::

  • Tragic backstory incoming?

    • Tsapki Perez

      Brace for impact!

  • Markus

What does Shane bring back to shore after a good catch?

    His proof of perch-ace.

    • Weatherheight

      Run, Markus, Run!

::watches fro the shadows while the Pun Police haul Markus off::

      Well, that’s not good….

      • Markus

It can only lead to cruel and unusual punishment.

    • Ganurath

      That pun…

      *rings a hand bell*
      *rings the bell again*

  • Christophe2314

I think the volunteer you’re speaking of might be a permanent aide, not just someone here for the event.

    • Dean

Or a friend or family member of the person in the tank.

  • Amulya

So many background characters, so little time…

Though quite honestly, I’m more interested in Blue Girl Moderator’s story.

    • Christophe2314

Her superpower: the psychic ability to defuse any tense situation.

  • martynW

Oh, God, every meeting you ever go to, it’s those same damn catering sandwiches, isn’t it?

    • Anonymous

      I. Fucking. Love. Those sandwiches. Those goddamn things are so fucking good, you don’t even know. I would get treatment for my anxiety if they would serve those goddamn sandwiches. Also the rolled-things on a tortilla that sometimes show up.

      • Chris Hubbard

Odd, for me its always the piles of baked chicken pieces and those little white potatoes at every catered meal. Usually ziti too. Sometimes they have a deli platter but its strictly make your own sammich.

  • Lexkat13

Yay! Love that Amanda’s from Michigan. 😀

  • JohnTomato

Don’t anyone tell her there’s tuna sandwiches.

  • KevlarNinja

*Hears that Amanda used to be a superhero*
Oh neat! I wished we could have seen her in action!
*Sees set up for why she stopped*
    Oh no…..

  • Philip Petrunak

Maybe she works with the US Navy as a secretly as a SEAL now? That would make sense. Especially since I am assuming as a Tier 2 resilient she’s probably either bulletproof or resistant. I assume Tier 1’s are the rare type that can withstand bombs, missiles, shells, AP rounds, etc.

  • Bruce Greenwood

I am disturbingly reminded of Fredo’s last fishing trip.

  • Tsapki Perez

Feels more likely to be tragic, either maybe a sort of Sophie’s Choice setup ( or a collateral damage thing like with Alison’s angry professor.

  • zathura

Uh oh, why is that “uh yeah pretty much” sounding ominous to me? Do we have another super hero gone the way of the villain?

  • Guancyto

“Reason you’re retiring as a superhero?”
    “…dynamite fishing.”

  • Hawthorne

Just sayin’…Panel One, those are clearly silhouettes of Ibis and Jacquel right behind Amanda.

  • Tylikcat

La la la! No, it’s absolutely about how he grampa is getting on in years, and they have a mutual love of fishing, so she decided to retire to make sure they got to spend some quality time together while they still can. Because family.
