Hey guys! Molly will be making a rare West coast appearance atย Comic Arts Los Angeles, or CALA, this Saturday! Iโ€™ll have lots of SFP books and maybe a few other fun things, so come on by!

We also just put t-shirts up in our shop!

    • Run Amok

      And it’s got little mittens!

      • allium

Hug-rated up to 300 psi, they put the “SQUEEE!” in “SQUEEEEISH!”

  • Anonymous

Why give it a body at all? Why not just stick it in a simulation in which in seems to have a body and see what it does from there. If it immediately kills your simulated avatar, scrap it and start over.

    • JustinR

I love this idea. It’s much easier to deal with Moriarty (from Star Trek:TNG) than a Terminator.

      • S.I. Rosenbaum

you guys are so wrong. It’s so much easier to take out a Cylon than to take out The Machine.

        • JustinR

Well of course it’s easier to take out a Necron than the Omnissiah.
Still doesn’t change that, with a good gun in my hand, I’d rather fight a Decker than a Rigger.

    • motorfirebox

She might have already run all kinds of test simulations, with this being the first real-world test.

    • allium

      They’re already in the simulation.

  • Pol Subanajouy

Al looks very Rosie the Riveter in the 4th panel. I like it!

  • Ian Osmond

Yay! Possibly a problem that can be solved by punching it! Alison REALLY REALLY REALLY wants to find a problem that can be solved by punching it.

  • Its expression already makes me think it’s just going to sigh, roll its eyes, and make a sarcastic quip about birth. Before asking where the nearest library is and sauntering off like a hunched over existential teenager. MISSION SUCCESS.

  • Taylor

Yep. Don’t waste your time with any fail-safes or emergency cut-offs. Just have Mega-Girl punch your problems away! *sigh* I’m going to have to call OSHA again.

    • David Nuttall

OSHA or IEEE? Which one deals with abuse of AI systems?

  • Keith

    What could possibly go wrong.

  • motorfirebox

Wait, so all along, creating true AI was just a matter of pressing the button in the middle of the robot’s chest?

    • Markus

I’m pretty sure having a hard on/off switch is a pretty good design choice when omnicidal robots are involved.

Side note: Is robot a slur for AI?

    • Darkoneko Hellsing

Well, creating, not, testing it, yes apparently

  • David Gottsegen

That robot looks like a mix between a Knight Templar and a Quarian. I shall call it, Knight vas Excelsior.

  • SergeBroom

    It’s clobbering time!

  • Sabe Jones

But… its faceplate is flat! It has no jaw! WHAT DO I DO??

  • Moddey Dhoo

If we ever get to the point of true AIs with physical bodies walking around, ‘robot’ *could* become a slur for them, since it implies a whole lot of things that the term ‘AI’ does not. I don’t think it’s a very strong possibility though, since technically they would be robots, though automata would be a better word. Also it sounds better. Nah, I think if we ever get to that point, the slurs for our robotic compatriots would be more inventive, like the slurs we currently have for people of various races.

    • Siras

Though historically, the word Robot comes from could be translated to mean serf. So it could theoretically become a slur.

    • Anyone else feel like making a head start:
      Tin Cans
      Artificial Idiots
Well… I guess I’m prepared for future bigotry.

    • JulietteF

I think robot would describe the species. And/Or it would be akin to calling them by kingdom or class: like calling humans animals or mammals. No biggie, no slur, just a matter of fact. Yes, I am an animal. Specifically, I’m human.

Calling them “Toasters” or “CrashTestAndroids” on the other hand, might really get a rise out them…

      • David Nuttall

Be careful. The waffle irons in Freefall are predatory. Don’t let the same happen to you.

    • Some guy

Depending how sensitive they are about such things, they might even object to the term “Artificial”, since it generally means “Fake”. An actual intelligent entity probably wouldn’t like being grouped in with the big hash of code that makes Ghandi love nuclear weapons or an enemy pop out from behind cover and fire randomly in your direction for exactly three seconds every three seconds.

Perhaps ‘Constructed Intelligence’, or ‘Emergent Intelligence’, or something along those lines would be more appropriate, but it would probably be best to wait until they exist and ask their opinion.

Of course, it’s also possible that they would have no interest or opinion in political correctness, and wouldn’t find anything offensive about even deliberate slurs toward them.

      • Moddey Dhoo

That’s just it. The thing about true AI is that we don’t have one yet, and any one we do get is bound to be alien to ourselves. It’s hard to posit what one would do.

  • TheGonzoMD .

Wha- don’t side with the mad scientist who makes suicidal robots, Alison!

  • Annelies

Hey, the link to your shop is broken, I thought I’d let you know. ๐Ÿ˜‰ You should change it from “www.strongfemaleprotagonist.bigcartel.com” to “http://www.strongfemaleprotagonist.bigcartel.com/”. When you use the former, it is assumed to be a relative link, and it gets tacked on to the current link to form “http://strongfemaleprotagonist.com/issue-5/page-68-2/www.strongfemaleprotagonist.bigcartel.com”. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Jack Lostthenames Warren

I really hope next level AI starts doing standup.

  • David Nuttall

All right! Hang 0x0A buddy! Oh, wrong surf. Never mind.

  • David Nuttall

Just watch. It easily blocks Allison’s punch, then returns one to Allison’s stomach, which she barely feels, but does knock her back a bit.

  • Mechwarrior

    Reactor… Online
    Sensors… Online
    Weapons… Online

    All systems nominal.

  • Abel Undercity

“Before we go grab some coffee let me take a sec to completely revolutionize computer science and possibly call into question how we view ourselves as sentient beings.”

    I like her.

  • Dean

In Alan Moore’s comic Top 10, the derogatory term for robots was ‘clickers’.

  • Sterling Ericsson

Considering the expression of the eyes, it seems she has created the snark robot that just doesn’t care about you.

  • Technically, I think it’s basically a synonym for “servitor” or “servant”. It already is a slur, if AI were such that people were instanced in the machinery, there would be reason to be offended. As it is, if there’s a person in the loop, that’s a waldo, or if the machinery is in a person, that’s a cyborg, although people aren’t generally in the habit of referring to folk with implanted devices like Dick Cheney as “cyborgs”, because the future creeps up on us on cats’ feet.

  • Bryan Briggs

Hi,guys! Again…love your comic! Sent you an e-mail a few days ago!
I hope you will respond to it! Keep up the good work, fellow artists!

  • Potatamoto

Whoa…teaching a sentient robot who has (presumably) super strength and other abilities about the world, ethics, morals, culture, all that stuff…wouldn’t THAT be an interesting independent study?

  • JulietteF
